Scars form when the skin repairs itself after damage, resulting in areas where normal tissue is replaced by connective tissue. Because this connective tissue has a different structure than the original skin, scars remain visible. If the damage is only superficial or limited to the outer layer of the skin (epidermis), scars are unlikely to form.
Scars usually do not cause any symptoms, but some people may seek treatment for cosmetic reasons. In some cases, scars can cause itching, irritation, or hardening. They may also restrict movement if they form near a joint.
While surgical treatments for scars are available, they can be expensive and may involve discomfort. Silicone therapy is often considered a more effective approach. Additionally, moisturising creams and gels can help promote healing, especially for smaller or newer scars.
