Dosage and usage

You should inject Saxenda under the skin once a day, preferably at the same time each day. The recommended dosage is gradually increased over a few weeks to help reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal side effects. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dose for you. It is important not to exceed the recommended dose, and if you miss a dose, do not double up. The effects of Saxenda can last for up to 14 hours.

From day 45, use a new pen every six days with a maintenance dose of 3 mg.
What Saxenda contains

Each pen of Saxenda contains liraglutide (6 mg/mL), along with excipients such as disodium phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol, phenol, and water for injections. 

Side effects

Common side effects of Saxenda include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Serious side effects may include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and thyroid tumors. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of pancreatitis like severe abdominal pain, with or without vomiting. 

Precautions

Do not use Saxenda if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2. This medication is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you have a history of pancreatitis or gallbladder problems, discuss the risks and benefits of Saxenda with your healthcare provider. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, especially insulin or other antidiabetic drugs.

What are the side effects of Saxenda?

Saxenda may cause side effects. The most common are:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation – these side effects usually go away after a few days or weeks.
  • Problems affecting the stomach and intestines.
  • Feeling weak or tired.
  • Changed sense of taste.
  • Dizziness.
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia).
  • Gallstones.
  • Injection site reactions (such as skin irritation or rash).
