Nexium is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It contains the active ingredient esomeprazole, which works by reducing the amount of acid produced in your stomach. This helps to relieve symptoms of conditions such as acid reflux, heartburn, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Nexium is suitable for adults who experience frequent heartburn or acid indigestion.

Dosage and usage

For adults, the typical dosage of Nexium for treating acid reflux and GERD is 20-40 mg once daily. You should take Nexium at least one hour before a meal. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew it. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not exceed the recommended dosage and frequency. If you experience severe or persistent symptoms, consult your healthcare provider.

Each Nexium tablet contains 20 mg or 40 mg of esomeprazole magnesium. The inactive ingredients may include glyceryl monostearate, hyprolose, hypromellose, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid copolymer, cellulose microcrystalline, synthetic paraffin, macrogol, polysorbate, crospovidone, sodium stearyl fumarate, sugar spheres, talc, titanium dioxide, and triethyl citrate.

Common side effects of Nexium may include headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and flatulence. Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include severe stomach pain, unusual tiredness, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, seizures, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
