Dosage and usage
Plus iconMinus

You should take Maxalt as soon as you feel a migraine headache coming on. The usual dose is one tablet (5 mg or 10 mg), swallowed whole with water. If your symptoms improve but return after 2 hours, you may take a second dose. However, do not exceed a total dose of 30 mg in a 24-hour period. If your migraine does not improve after taking Maxalt or worsens, contact your healthcare provider. It's important to note that Maxalt does not prevent future migraines or reduce their frequency.

Each Maxalt tablet contains either 5 mg or 10 mg of rizatriptan benzoate as the active ingredient. In addition to rizatriptan, Maxalt tablets also contain excipients such as lactose monohydrate, cellulose, microcrystalline, and magnesium stearate. These components are essential for the formulation of the tablet.

Common side effects of Maxalt may include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth. However, more serious side effects such as chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or signs of a stroke (e.g., sudden numbness or weakness) require immediate medical attention. If you experience any severe allergic reactions (e.g., difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat), seek emergency help right away.

Precautions

Do not take Maxalt if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, or a history of stroke. It is essential to avoid Maxalt if you have certain types of migraines (e.g., hemiplegic or basilar migraines) or severe liver disease. Maxalt is not recommended for individuals under 18 years old or pregnant women. If you are taking medications like monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), consult your doctor before using Maxalt to prevent potential drug interactions.
