Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil is a medication used to treat HIV infection in adults and adolescents weighing at least 35 kg. It contains two active ingredients, Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Disoproxil. Emtricitabine belongs to a class of drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), while Tenofovir Disoproxil is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI). Together, they work by reducing the amount of HIV in your body, helping your immune system work better.

Dosage and usage

The usual dose for Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil is one tablet once a day, with or without food. It's important to take it regularly to get the most benefit. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you have any questions about your dosage, consult your healthcare provider.

Each tablet contains 200 mg of Emtricitabine and 245 mg of Tenofovir Disoproxil (equivalent to 300 mg of Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate). The other ingredients include croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, and talc.

Common side effects of Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil may include nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and trouble sleeping. Serious side effects can include lactic acidosis (build-up of acid in your blood) and liver problems. Get medical help right away if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, liver problems, or kidney problems.

Before taking Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil, tell your healthcare provider if you have kidney problems, liver problems, or bone problems. This medication is not recommended for use in people with severe kidney disease. Do not breastfeed while taking this medication. If you have HIV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, your HBV may get worse if you stop taking Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil. Talk to your doctor before stopping this medication.
