Avodart is a medication that contains the active ingredient dutasteride. It is used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate gland. Avodart works by reducing the size of the prostate gland, improving urinary flow, and decreasing the risk of urinary retention. This medication is suitable for men with BPH who experience difficulty urinating, weak urine flow, frequent urination, or a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.

Dosage and usage

You should take Avodart exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The usual dose is one capsule (0.5 mg) taken orally once a day. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. It may take several weeks to see the full benefits of Avodart. Do not exceed the recommended dose, and do not stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Each Avodart capsule contains 0.5 mg of dutasteride as the active ingredient. The capsule also includes excipients such as mono- and di-glycerides of caprylic/capric acid, butylated hydroxytoluene, gelatin (from certified BSE-free bovine sources), glycerin, and titanium dioxide.

Common side effects of Avodart may include decreased libido, impotence, ejaculation disorders, breast enlargement or tenderness, and dizziness. Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching, swelling), testicular pain, and signs of heart failure such as swelling of the ankles, shortness of breath, or rapid weight gain. If you experience prolonged and painful erections (priapism), seek medical help immediately.

Do not take Avodart if you are allergic to dutasteride or any of the other ingredients in the medication. Women, especially pregnant or breastfeeding women, should not handle Avodart capsules due to the risk of absorption through the skin. Inform your doctor about any other medical conditions you have, especially liver disease. Avodart may interact with certain medications, so inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines you are taking, including herbal supplements. If you have a history of heart problems, discuss with your doctor before starting Avodart.
