Period pain

Menstruation pain is a common issue that often occurs before and on the first day of a period. To expel the uterine lining, the muscle tissue in the womb contracts, and these contractions typically cause period pain.

General

More than 60% of women experience period pain, which can range from mild to severe. The discomfort may manifest as abdominal cramps, headaches, nausea, vomiting, or back pain. Some women also experience heavy bleeding, and in certain cases, period pain can start around the time of ovulation.

How to relieve period pain

There are several options to alleviate period pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and aspirin are effective for reducing cramps and related discomfort. These medications, including brands like Advil, Nurofen, and Aleve (which contains naproxen), can provide relief but may affect the stomach and intestinal lining in some cases.

The contraceptive pill for period pain

Taking the contraceptive pill is a popular option for managing period pain. The hormones in the pill prevent egg maturation and ovulation, leading to less severe menstrual symptoms. Many women (80% - 90%) notice a significant reduction in pain when using the contraceptive pill, making it a highly effective remedy.

Other methods for managing period pain

Besides the contraceptive pill, there are additional ways to ease period discomfort:

  • Heat therapy: Applying heat can help relax the muscles and reduce abdominal cramps. A heated pillow, hot water bottle, or heat patch can be placed on the lower abdomen for relief. Heat patches can provide warmth for up to 8 hours.
  • TENS therapy: Another option is using a pain patch like Medisana Medistim, which utilizes TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation). The low electrical current stimulates the nerves in the skin, blocking pain signals to the brain and providing immediate relief.
